Brief Overview
- Qualcomm has launched two new flagship chips, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, at Snapdragon Summit 2026.
- Both chips use a 2nm process with faster CPUs, upgraded GPUs, and smarter AI hardware for on-device agentic AI.
- Phones like the Xiaomi 18 Pro, Motorola Signature 27, OnePlus 16, and iQOO 16 are expected to launch with these chips in the coming weeks.
Qualcomm has kicked off its 2026 flagship chip season at Snapdragon Summit in Maui.
The company officially announced its yearly Snapdragon chipset update with two mobile platforms: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Elite Gen 6.
Two Flagship Chips Instead of One
The big change this year is that there are now a pair of chips. Qualcomm considers both to be flagship offerings that give OEMs greater choice.
The Elite Gen 6 follows last year’s Elite Gen 5, while the Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits a level higher.

Chris Patrick, the executive leading Qualcomm’s mobile handsets business, said the dual platform approach lets manufacturers shape the next generation of intelligent, personalized mobile experiences.
Faster, More Efficient Cores
Both chips are built on a 2nm process with an Oryon CPU that has two 5GHz Prime Cores and six 4GHz Performance cores.
The 8 Elite Gen 6 offers 10% improved CPU performance and a 37% gain in power efficiency compared to the Gen 5, while the Elite Extreme sees a 13% CPU performance jump.
Tying the cores together is a new shared cache system. Qualcomm has redesigned the CPU subsystem around a new cache architecture called Flex Cache, a dynamically allocated shared cache pool accessed by all the cores.
This lets the Prime cores draw on the entire cache when workloads demand it.
On the graphics side, a rearchitected Adreno GPU offers 35% improved GPU performance and a 40% power efficiency improvement over the Gen 5.
What Makes the Extreme Different
Rather than simply clocking higher, the Extreme variant adds extra AI and gaming hardware.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 carries the new CPU, NPU, connectivity, and graphics architecture into a broader range of premium smartphones.

The Extreme adds dedicated graphics AI hardware, additional high-performance GPU memory, Neural Fusion, and higher-end media capabilities.
Both platforms feature prime cores running up to 5.0GHz, paired with UFS 5.0 storage support and LP-DDR5x/6 memory up to 24GB.
The Extreme pushes ceilings higher still, with 50% larger shared memory and support for AI models with more than 30 billion parameters.
AI and Gaming Is the Main Selling Point
Qualcomm is leaning heavily on “agentic AI” this generation. These are chips that can act on a user’s behalf rather than just process requests.
The new Hexagon NPU is designed to handle more AI processing directly on the phone, including understanding user context and adapting to how the device is used.
On the Extreme chip, the Hexagon NPU also gets a larger shared memory cache, up 50% over the previous generation’s NPU.
For gamers, one of the biggest additions is Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI to improve frame generation and image quality in games.

Camera and Video Upgrades
Content creators also get meaningful improvements.
The camera system adds Advanced Professional Video (APV) support, 8K60 video capture, and 4K240 ultra HD slow motion, along with better scene understanding for more natural-looking results.
Additionally, the Extreme’s global VVC (H.266) codec also enables more power-efficient video.
Which Phones Will Get It
Several major brands are already lined up. Xiaomi will be the first brand to launch its Xiaomi 18 Pro and Pro Max, with the Pro running the standard 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Pro Max running the Elite Extreme.
Motorola’s Signature 27 will be among the first devices with the Extreme chip. Other expected devices include the OnePlus 16 and iQOO 16.

Qualcomm confirmed that key smartphone manufacturers will begin launching devices powered by both chips globally in the coming weeks.
Bottom Line
Qualcomm’s split into two flagship tiers gives phone makers more flexibility, letting them pick between a strong all-rounder in the 8 Elite Gen 6 and a more powerful, AI and gaming-focused option in the Extreme.
Both are faster and more power-efficient than last year’s chip, and both put heavy emphasis on on-device AI. Expect the first phones running these chips to arrive within weeks.
