End of an Era: Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Discs Soon

Brief Overview

  • Sony will shift to an all-digital game service starting in January 2028.
  • This comes after a sharp decline in physical game sales.
  • Upcoming Sony PS6 may skip a disc drive entirely.

Sony is ending an era for PlayStation game releases. Starting January 2028, the PlayStation maker will no longer produce physical discs for new games released on its consoles. Instead, all new PlayStation titles will be available exclusively in digital format either through the PlayStation Store or through digital codes at retail stores.

The announcement was made by PlayStation’s senior director of content communications in a post on the official PlayStation blog. The company claims that this follows changing consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry’s ongoing shift away from physical media toward digital distribution.

What Do the End Physical PlayStation Game Discs Could Mean

This change is not retroactive. PlayStation games that have already been released, along with titles launching before January 2028, will still be sold on physical discs.

It’s worth noting that Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release this fall and will still get a disc version.

A Difficult Change for Collectors

The timing of Sony’s announcement is notable. It arrived just days after fans expressed frustration over reports that Grand Theft Auto 6’s physical edition would only include a download code inside the box, rather than an actual disc.

This backlash is a sign that a dedicated group of collectors still values and prioritises owning physical media, even as the broader market moves on.

Older Stores Are Closing Too

Other than the disc announcement, Sony also revealed its plan to shut down older digital storefronts. The PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets later this year, with the PS3 and PlayStation Vita stores closing worldwide next year.

That said, previously purchased games are expected to remain available to download for the time being.

What It Means for the PS6

Sony’s announcement also raises questions about the next PlayStation console. Since new PlayStation games will continue to be released on physical discs until January 2028, many believe the next PS6 is unlikely to launch before then.

It has also led to speculation that the base model may not include a disc drive, although Sony has not confirmed any details about the console.

The Digital Age

Unfortunately, Sony is not the only company moving in this direction. Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly testing a feature that would let players convert their existing physical game collections into digital copies on Xbox One and Series X/S consoles.

For PlayStation, which helped popularise disc-based gaming when it launched in 1994, the move marks the end of a three-decade era.
