HMD Pulse 2 Teased: Smoother Display, Repairable Design Evolution

HMD is set to refresh its affordable lineup with the HMD Pulse 2. This one will be a follow-up to the original Pulse that was launched in April 2024 as a budget-friendly phone.

HMD Pulse 2 Specifications (Rumoured)

The Pulse 2 is expected to transition to a newer Unisoc platform, likely from the Tiger T6xx family, which is reported to be an upgraded version of the Unisoc T606 used in the original Pulse. At the same time, this HMD smartphone is expected to pack a 6.6 to 6.7-inch IPS LCD panel with a refresh rate up to 90Hz.

HMD Pulse

The photography leaks point towards a 50MP primary rear camera, which is a step up from the 13MP main camera in the first HMD Pulse. This sensor is tipped to be paired with basic companion lenses, likely a depth or macro unit, focusing more on improving the main camera quality than chasing multi-sensor counts.

While the front camera details haven’t been confirmed yet, it is speculated to feature a 50MP selfie camera, which is very rare for this price range. Furthermore, the battery is expected to be a 5,000mAh with around 10W to 20W wired charging, mirroring the present HMD and Pulse series devices that prioritise battery endurance over ultra-fast charging speeds.

As for the design leaks, HMD is expected to stick to a practical, no-nonsense look. It appears that the phone will feature a slightly boxy frame, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a polycarbonate back. The focus appears to be on durability and easy repairs, rather than flashy, glass-heavy design, following in the footsteps of its predecessor.

HMD Pulse 2: Positioning, Launch, and Pricing

The HMD Pulse 2 launch date is not revealed yet, but it is expected to feature as an affordable mid-ranger in markets where it is already sold, which includes parts of Europe and Asia. Again, it is too early to predict the HMD Pulse 2 pricing. However, it is likely to be priced slightly above the original HMD Pulse, which currently sits in the INR 14,000 to INR 18,000 range. That said, these details remain speculative until HMD makes an official announcement.

If the above speculations are true, it is clear that the company is stepping into the mid-price range with a smartphone focused on a better camera and design. And it’s the need of the hour. Because, call it a limited product lineup, aggressive competition, or un-compelling prices, HMD’s Pulse series has continued to struggle in India. The brand’s recall remains weak, and its market share has stayed very low. Hence, it remains to be seen how the upcoming HMD Pulse 2 will perform in India.
